Matchgirls Memorial – 1871

On this day 150 years ago, hundreds of Bryant and May workers marched from the East End of London to parliament, to protest the Match Tax. They were successful in overturning the tax in spite of the huge obstacles that they faced. To commemorate this I am posting some paintings of matches. These come from a series called “Time flies…” for this art work, I lit each match from a box, photographed and then painted them. This is a time for celebration of the power of protest. #StartsWithASpark #KillTheBill
